Carbohydrates release glucose into the bloodstream as they break down. Some carbohydrates break down faster than others. The Glycemic Index (or GI) is a measure of how fast different foods break down, with 100 representing glucose itself.

Low GI Foods (GI of 55 or less) release glucose slowly and are considered healthy. Some examples are fruit, such as apples and peaches, or pasta.

Medium GI Foods (GI between 56 and 69) release glucose more rapidly so are not as healthy as Low GI Foods. Potatoes are an example of Medium GI Foods.

High GI Foods (GI over 70) release glucose the fastest and are the least healthy. Some examples are white bread and white rice.

Glycemic Load (or GL) is a new measure added in this update. It combines the GI score of a food and the amount of carbohydrates in that food.

Low GL Foods (GL of 10 or less) are considered most healthy.

Medium GL Foods (GL between 11 and 19) are in the middle.

High GL Foods (GL over 20) are the least healthy.

Generally GI foods are also low GL foods. But some high GI foods such as watermelon (GI=72) are low GL Foods (GL=4). This is because watermelon contains a very low amount of carbohydrates.

This app enables you to search a list of 3,000 foods using multiple and/or partial word searches. Simply press the search box and enter your search via the keypad. You can also scroll through the items. Then click on the row of your choice and the full text of the food will appear followed by it's Glycemic Index, Glycemic Load, serve size and carbs per serve.

Disclaimer:

Glycemic Index is measured under experimental conditions. Each person has their own unique glycemic response. Therefore the data contained in this app should be used only as a guide. People who require a low GI Diet for medical conditions such as diabetes should consult with a trained professional before undertaking any change in diet.
